RESIDENTS and visitors will be able to spend a penny at a Morpeth public toilet in comfort after it received a major makeover.

The facilities at the Terrace Car Park toilets near St George’s United Reformed Church were in a poor state, but £20,000 was provided to install new units and add a disabled toilet and baby changing area.

A new roof has been put in place and painting has been carried out to brighten it up. Works were undertaken by Northumberland-based business SinCera.

County councillors Andrew Tebbutt and David Moore each put forward £7,000 from their Small Schemes Allowances and the town council, which now manages the facilities on behalf of Northumberland County Council, provided the remaining £6,000.

Coun Tebbutt said: “We were very aware that these are often the toilets that tourists come to and the state they were in was bad for the town’s image.

“David and I were pleased to contribute to the refurbishment and now they look fantastic.”

The facilities will be regularly attended to and they will be monitored by CCTV.
