WILDLIFE watchers in the North East have been urged to get snapping for a photography competition.

Northumberland, Durham and Tees Valley Wildlife Trusts have teamed up with the Natural History Society of Northumbria and the Great North Museum to launch the contest to showcase the best of the region’s wildlife.

There are five categories — wildlife portraits, wildlife behaviour, wildlife in the landscape, botanical and young person’s photos of flora and fauna — and a maximum of five images per person can be entered.

The competition, which is sponsored by Hawk’s Head Photography, Opticron and Nestle Fawdon, is open to both amateurs and professionals, but only pictures taken in the North East will be eligible.

Prizes include £250, photography workshops and an Opticron IS 60 ED digiscoping kit for DSLR cameras.

The winning and runner-up images will also be displayed at the Great North Museum before touring the region.

Hawk’s Head Photography Director Alan Hewitt said: “This is a great time of year for wildlife and nature photographers to be getting out into the field.

“The quality of light can be amazing around sunrise and sunset and here in the wonderful North East we have no shortage of beautiful wildlife.”

Entries should be submitted by Thursday, January 31.

Entrants should include their name, details of the category they are entering, where the picture was taken, a contact telephone number and address. Those entering the young person’s category should also include their date of birth.

Low resolution images can be sent to northeastwildlifephoto@gmail.com and printed photographs, with the details on the back, should be posted to Steve Ashton, North East Wildlife Photography Competition, Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, Margrove Heritage Centre, Boosbeck, Saltburn, TS12 3BZ.
