Car parking compromise

A COMPROMISE on car parking has been reached with people living near Morpeth’s new Morrisons supermarket.

The county council had proposed banning parking outside garages in Staithes Lane as the area is prepared for the Low Stanners shop’s opening early next year.

But of 57 people consulted, 11 were against and only one in favour because they wanted the ability to leave their cars outside the garages.

Last week, county planning committee members unanimously agreed to a compromise in which parking would be allowed outside garages, except in one area where emergency access was needed.

Members heard this went against design practice for such schemes because it could lead to neighbours blocking driveways and garages, but an exception should be made in view of residents’ views.

As part of the shop development, a long-stay car park for 283 cars will be built and a short-stay car park with 296 spaces.
