A COUNTY beauty spot was recognised in last week’s North East England Tourism Awards.

Among the successful businesses and organisations was Wallington, which took silver in the Large Visitor Attraction category.

Organised by the NewcastleGateshead Initiative and delivered in partnership with Northumberland County Council, the event saw almost 400 members of the local tourism community come together to celebrate its achievements during 2012.

Julie Tucker, events and promotion manager at Wallington, said: “We are delighted to have received the silver award. It was a tough category and we are pleased and proud to have been recognised, especially as this was the first occasion we have ever entered these awards.

“The staff and volunteers have done a fantastic job of improving the visitor experience at Wallington over the last few years and it is wonderful that all their hard work has been recognised.

“This award will certainly inspire us to continue developing the experience we offer and work to ensure that 2013 is even more successful.”

A number of other Northumberland visitor attractions picked up an award, including Woodhorn Museum and Northumberland Archives, which is based near Ashington. It received the gold accolade for the Sustainable Tourism category.
