TRADERS at Morpeth Farmers’ Market will be hoping for a boost in business following the horsemeat scandal.

Customers nationwide are turning back to local butchers after horsemeat was found in some beef and pork products in supermarkets.

And with Morpeth Farmers’ Market due to take place on Saturday, stallholders expect to be busier than ever as they guarantee that what it says on their labels is correct.

New to the market this month is Swallow Fish from Seahouses, selling locally-caught fish and shellfish, including crab, langoustines and prawns.

Among the specials will be Mary Howlett from Newcastleton, who will not only sell her free-range chicken, but also beef from her own shorthorn cattle. And the Great Northumberland Bread Co from Etal will offer a range of breads from wood-fired ovens.

More than 20 stalls will be at the market, selling produce such as cheese, jam, pastries, meat, cakes and quiche. It will run from 9am to 3pm in Morpeth Market Place.
