Flood works cancel Fair Day parade

THE centrepiece of a Morpeth community event will not be taking place this year.

Due to works on the town’s flood alleviation scheme, High Stanners will not be available for Morpeth Fair Day and this means the parade of floats, vintage cars and Harley Davidson motorbikes has been cancelled.

Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade, which organises the event, is now appealing for help in coming up with an alternative activity and it is also looking to relocate the attractions that usually take place in that area. They include falconry displays, paintball, chainsaw sculptures and games.

Chamber Chairman John Beynon said: “We need High Stanners to park the vehicles for the parade and initially we thought we might still be OK, but we did tell the people who supply the cars and bikes that we may not be able to have the parade if there is a problem.

“The Environment Agency has now told us that it will not be possible to locate them in High Stanners because of the works it is doing. It’s a pity because the parade is a major highlight of the fair.

“As a result, we’re seeking ideas from members of the public for something spectacular to take its place this year.”

The 2013 Fair Day will be held on Sunday, June 9. There will still be plenty of attractions such as fairground rides, stalls, games, displays and entertainment.
