COLLECTIONS of a former football star are up for grabs, including photographs of Newcastle United players in the club’s 1927 Championship winning days.

The items belonged to footballer Roy MacKenzie, who played for Newcastle United in the mid 1920s.

They include his own caps and medals, as well as a photograph of the day he signed for Hull City.

And there are photographs and postcards of the Newcastle players on the training ground.

Mr Mackenzie is believed to have lived in Northumberland, possibly in Ashington.

The memorabilia will be sold at Louis Johnson Auction House in Bridge Street, Morpeth, next month.

Auctioneer Barbara Turner said: “It is a lovely collection. It is being sold as one lot because it would be a shame to separate the items. It could fetch anything from £600 to £1,000.

“It would appeal to anyone who is interested in football — football memorabilia is really sought after.

“This is an interesting collection. I doubt there are many photographs around of the team training in that era. In the early days they didn’t have much photography like that.”

The collection includes four gold medals, silver medals, two caps, photographs and postcards of the team, a photograph of Mr MacKenzie signing for Hull and a picture of him as a boy in his football kit.

The auction will take place on Saturday, June 1 and the lot will be available to view about a week before the sale.
