MP Sir Alan Beith raised devolution as a way of promoting regional economic growth during a debate last week.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was taking questions and Sir Alan asked if he agreed that the North East could benefit greatly from this, to which Mr Clegg replied that he did.
Sir Alan said: “It is important to take every opportunity to raise the needs of the North East, and the rural areas away from Tyneside and Teesside, with ministers.
“I am continuing to have discussions with ministers about the importance of improving the North East’s infrastructure to help our regional economy by making progress on rural broadband and improving the A1 in Northumberland.”
