THE kindness of strangers can still be counted on in Morpeth it seems after lost mail found its way to Australia.
Morpeth resident Keith, who does not wish us to publish his surname, had been on his way to the town centre post office with a bundle of Christmas cards to send to friends and relatives around the globe.
However, when he arrived he realised that the card for his nephew in Australia was missing.
A few days later he retraced his steps, but there was no sign of the mail so he sent off another card.
His nephew then got in touch to say that two cards had arrived, one of which had a note to say it had been found in the street.
Keith said: “My nephew is in Australia working at the moment. The Christmas card was of a snowy scene to send to him in the heat of Perth.
“I remember seeing his card as I walked down Curly Kews, but when I got to the post office it wasn’t there. Somebody had found it and paid for the postage to send it on. It also had a note on the back wishing him a happy Christmas.
“It was a really nice thing to do and it isn’t cheap to send post to Australia. It’s nice to know that there are people around like that.”
The woman who found the letter by Morpeth Clock Tower does not wish to be named.
She said: “I like to think that somebody would do the same for me.
“My friend thought I was mad, paying to send the card to Australia, but I thought it could mean a lot to somebody.
“The lady in the post office said it was my good deed for the day, which made me feel nice.
“I would do the same thing again, and I often put letters in the post that have been dropped beside the post box.”
