WOMEN are taking the spotlight in two annual services.

The Women’s World Day of Prayer Service takes place tomorrow as one of the main events in the Morpeth Churches Together calendar.

Titled Streams In The Desert, it has been prepared by the Christian women of Egypt, and music will be provided by parishioners from Morpeth and Mitford.

The speaker will be Jean Tait and the service will be attended by Morpeth Mayor Joan Tebbutt.

It will be hosted by Morpeth Baptist Church at Morpeth Methodist Church in Howard Terrace, at 2pm.

On Monday, attention shifts to St Mary’s Church for International Women’s Day.

Northumberland County Council will host a service at noon, celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women.

The event recognises women throughout the world, but particularly honours the memory of Northumberland Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, who is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard.

The women’s rights campaigner died in June 1913 after she was struck by the King’s horse when she stepped onto the track at the Epsom Derby.

Dame Elish Angiolini, the Principal of St Hugh’s College in Oxford, where Emily completed her degree in English Language and Literature, will address the congregation, before county civic head Kath Nisbet leads people to lay flowers on Emily’s grave.

Coun Nisbet said: “Last year’s service marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Emily Davison and launched the Emily Inspires events so well received. We hope to recreate the special atmosphere of Emily Inspires and invite the public to join us in doing so.”
