A CCTV image has been released of a man wanted in relation to the theft of luggage from a train.

The incident happened on the 9pm East Coast trains service from Edinburgh Waverley to Leeds on Wednesday, May 14.

The victim, a 21-year-old-woman, boarded the train at Edinburgh and put her bag in the luggage area.

PC Wayne Brown of BTP Newcastle said: “At around 11.15pm, the woman checked on her bag before leaving the service at Leeds and found it was gone.

“We believe it was taken by a man who got off the train at Morpeth.”

The stolen luggage was square, dark green and had a decorative gold padlock on the front.

PC Brown added: “The contents of the bag are valued at around £600 and included several items of jewellery in a smaller orange bag.

“During the course of our investigation into this incident we made checks at all stations on the route to see if the bag had been handed in, but it is still missing.

“We believe the man in the pictures can help us with our inquiries and I would urge anyone who recognises him to contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference PSUB/B2 of 13/06/2014. Information can also be passed, anonymously, to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
