Proposals to install a toilet at a rural church are being drawn up by the Parish of Ponteland.

The project for the Holy Saviour Church in Milbourne would cost in the region of £10,000.

The facility would be in a detached building and a footpath would also be constructed.

Church Secretary Duncan Wheeler said: “We believe that in this day and age, we should be providing a toilet and running water.

“Holy Saviour became licensed for weddings about five years ago and it also does funerals and in many cases, people travel quite some distance to get to the church for these occasions.

“It’s a Grade II-listed building, so we have to do things properly and we are currently negotiating with the planning authority and the church authorities.

“If we are able to put these facilities in place, this will enable us to stage more events for the community, such as concerts.”

In 1867, funded by a gift and endowment of Miss Jane Anne Bates of Milbourne Hall, work began to build a church as a Chapel of Ease to the mother church of St Mary’s in Ponteland. It was completed in 1871.

In the year 2000, the plain glass of the west window was replaced with a new stained-glass window.

Any individuals, community groups and businesses that would like to support the project can contact the parish office on 01661 824470.
