Police have carried out another operation to try to prevent rural crime.

Officers from the East Tynedale Neighbourhood Policing Team stopped 50 vehicles in the Ponteland area in a day-long initiative earlier this month.

The operation, which took place on July 15, was carried out with partners from the Vehicle Operating Standards Agency (VOSA) and HM Revenue and Customs to check vehicles and make sure motorists had the right paperwork.

Such action aims to disrupt thieves travelling around rural communities and ensure that drivers aren’t flouting road safety regulations.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Mick Stephenson said: “We work closely with our partners to stop and check vehicles to ensure they are abiding by laws and regulations.

“As well as improving road safety, it helps us gather information about vehicles travelling into the area so we can prevent criminals coming here to commit crime.

“We’ll be working with our partners to carry out these operations regularly throughout the summer.”

Last month, officers visited 241 farms in rural areas of Northumberland to give crime prevention advice and ensure they had adequate security in place.

They also urged the residents to sign up to the Farmwatch scheme to enable them to access and share information quickly.

Superintendent Mick Paterson said: “We’re using a combination of tactics to take action against those involved in rural crime and to prevent offences from happening in the first place. We’re committed to doing everything possible to ensure the county remains a safe place.”
