A Commemoration Day will be held in Netherwitton to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

There are 20 names on the war memorial in St Giles Church, including casualties from Nunnykirk and White House, and a further 30 people are mentioned on the village memorial, which unusually also names the men who served and returned from the war.

Organisers of the commemoration have been researching the names on the memorial. One of the team Julie Famelton said: “We hope to have an interesting display and would be interested to talk to anyone whose family may have lived in the area, or to see them on the Commemoration Day where we plan each serviceman to have a representative from the current community.”

The event takes place
at Netherwitton Hall on Sunday, August 3, from noon to 6pm. It will combine commemoration activities with the annual fete and will include stalls, a barbecue, afternoon tea and a dressing up competition.

Tickets for the barbecue cost £10 adults, £5 under 16s, available by emailing netherwittonww1day@gmail.com
