A proposal for a smaller hotel on the edge of Ponteland has been submitted.
The new bid by Andrew Singh at Street Houses, near the Badger pub and restaurant and Dobbies Garden World, is for a 14-bedroom facility with ancillary car parking areas and access roads.
His plans for a three-storey building to accommodate a 46-bedroom hotel last year was refused by Northumberland County Council planning officers under delegated powers.
Their reasons included that it would constitute inappropriate development in the green-belt, have a detrimental impact on the visual amenity of the site and result in the unacceptable loss of trees covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) and they said the application did not meet its standards for on-site vehicular parking and manoeuvring facilities.
In addition, Newcastle International Airport objected on the grounds of oversupply and overdevelopment and Northumbrian Water said insufficient information had been supplied with regards to the disposal of foul and surface water.
In the design and access statement for the new application, agent Nigel Picken said: “The proposed building is no longer three-storey and no trees covered by a TPO are to be removed.
“It is the same site footprint, height and scale as the existing buildings on the site and visually, it will be an improvement on the rather plain and rundown buildings that currently occupy the site.
“The current proposal has 21 parking spaces for 14 rooms, with adequate manoeuvring spaces within the site and parking areas.”
A total of 41 residents objected to the first application and there have been three for the latest bid so far, including from Ponteland Civic Society.
