A role model for young people who helps ‘because it’s fun’ picked up the Community Champion gong at the Best of Northumberland awards.

At just 18, George Murray is already making his mark in the community.

The Wooler lad volunteers for numerous organisations and charities and can always be relied on to ‘get stuck in.’

He’s a young firefighter, a lifeguard, a regular volunteer for the local snow-clearing team, a mentor at Berwick Academy, stewards at the Chevy Chase and Glendale Show, is a local cub leader and a member of the steel pan band in Wooler, to name just a few.

George gained local press coverage when he witnessed a nasty road traffic accident and his quick-thinking and calm manner impressed everyone at the scene. He didn’t panic and administered first aid and was recognised for his feat by emergency workers.

The incident sparked his decision to train as a paramedic and has just started his degree at Teesside University.

He came to the awards night during Freshers’ week.

George said: “It’s good to get this but I don’t really need an award for what I have done, I just do it for fun.

“ I like it and I like helping people, that’s just me.”

Also nominated: Louise Wood, from Norham, who, despite having two children, manages to run her own business and volunteer for numerous organisations, and Brenda Main, from Linton Colliery, who goes above and beyond to organise a weekly T@3 event.
