Bumper crop at Middleton

There have been difficult conditions for growers, but it was another bumper year for the Middleton and District Leek Show.

Entries were down in the flower and vegetable sections, but there was a strong show of leeks and it was one of the best ever years for fund-raising for the event.

The community turned out in force at Middleton Village Hall to bid in the auction and join in with a raffle and tombola.

Show Secretary and Treasurer Andrew Elliott said: “It was a difficult year for the growers because everything seemed to be that far forward and a lot of the flowers had gone over. Our flower and vegetable entries were down, but there were some very good leeks, which we were quite surprised about.

“On the whole, the show went very well. It was very well supported, the local community all turned out and we had a successful day. It was one of our best years for fund-raising. We took over £1,000, though that is not all profit because we have to take expenses out. The money will help to build the funds up for next year’s show.”
