Moves under way to spruce up key places

A range of schemes to improve the environment in a county village at key locations have been approved.

Among the works to take place in Pegswood is a project to change the layout of and carry out planting at the roundabout structure which contains the Robin of Pegswood statue.

The parish council has agreed to spend up to £1,500 from its minor environmental works budget to address the problems that are having a negative impact on its appearance.

Commissioned by the Welbeck Estates and designed by Longhirst artist Tom Maley, the bronze 36ft high sculpture depicts a miner firing an arrow to capture the community’s heritage and also celebrates Welbeck’s Nottingham connections.

Paul Williams, chairman of the council’s environment working group, said: “At the moment, the roundabout facility itself is good at attracting litter, so the changes and planting are necessary to make the area around this great attraction neater and tidier and look better overall.”

Up to £500 has been committed for planting activities in various places in partnership with Groundwork North East. The plan is to involve Pegswood First School pupils and youth organisations.

The Christmas tree is set to be planted soon at the junction of the village’s main street with Longhirst Road. Coun Williams said it will grow over time as it was not sustainable to buy a tree every year.

In addition, the planting scheme on Butterwell Drive will be removed and reinstated as grass and new advisory signs (dog free zone and adult gym equipment users must be aged 14 and over) will be installed at the Juliet Oakley Activity Area.
