Green light for new homes

A detailed application for 225 new homes at a site in Morpeth has received planning permission.

Outline approval for the development on land at Northgate Hospital was granted by Northumberland County Council three years ago, and now Taylor Wimpey’s full bid has been given the green light by officers under delegated powers.

There were three objections and Morpeth Town Council raised concerns.

Issues raised included a potential increase in flood risk from surface water, the impact of new homes on the surrounding area and rural character and fears that the scale of residential development will impact on existing residents at Fairmoor and create a dormitory suburb.

The planning department’s report says the buildings are of an appropriate design and the development ‘could be accommodated on the site without appearing dominant or overbearing in relation to the surrounding residential dwellings within Northgate Hospital’.

The approval is subject to a unilateral undertaking to secure contributions towards maintenance of the sustainable drainage system (SuDS) pond.

At a meeting of the town council’s planning committee last month, Brian Cunningham of Taylor Wimpey said that a new pumping station for foul water and sewage will be built at the hospital site.
