A scheme to convert kennels and outbuildings into three homes and a garage at Meldon were unanimously approved last week.

Members of Northumberland County Council’s North Area Planning Committee gave the go-ahead to plans for the extension and conversion of existing Grade II-listed buildings at Rivergreen Kennels.

They are a late 19th-century complex of hunting kennels for the Morpeth Hunt formed out of an early 19th-century planned farmstead.

The site comprises the main kennel block and the attached Kennelman’s House (3 Rivergreen Kennels), as well as detached pup kennels to the north-west and a detached kennel building north of the main range of buildings.

Councillors felt happy to support the application as it had been amended to ensure certain buildings in the complex were protected.

An original scheme was unacceptable due to the proposed complete demolition of the detached pup kennels building, which is Grade II-listed in its own right.

Meldon Parish Council had objected to the plans, due to the loss of the pup kennels, but also due to concerns over visual impact, flooding and sewage, bats and access arrangements.
