Community groups are being encouraged to apply for council funding of up to £10,000 to support their projects.

Northumberland County Council’s Community Chest scheme aims to support activities that are of benefit to the area’s neighbourhoods and people.

It is open to any voluntary, community or not-for-profit organisations based in Northumberland, or predominantly serving the county, and grants can be used for a wide variety of purposes, from staging events to purchasing equipment, or to support initiatives that may lead to the development of sustainable long-term projects.

Funding of up to £10,000 may be granted for schemes, and there is no minimum amount for applications.

Priority will be given to small community groups and those who have not previously received a grant from the scheme.

Council Policy Board Member for Corporate Resources, David Ledger, said: “Community groups are often enthusiastic to do more to meet the needs of their communities, but lack of money is often a major obstacle for them.

“The Community Chest is a popular grant fund and has helped a wide variety of hard-working groups right across the county to finance worthwhile community causes.”

This year, there will be three funding rounds over the year. A panel of councillors considers the applications.

The deadline for the next round is Friday, January 9. For information or an application form, log on to www.northumberland.gov.uk
