The new director of education and skills for Northumberland has set himself and his team some demanding results.
Andy Johnson has a wide range of responsibilities – including improving the quality of schools, adult learning and supporting vulnerable pupils such as those with special educational needs.
He has a distinguished career, with 35 years’ experience in education and a variety of senior leadership roles. Most recently, he was a senior Her Majesty’s Inspector of Schools.
Mr Johnson said: “I am really proud and privileged to take up this post. I am delighted to be working in Northumberland and relish the challenges ahead.
“My main aim is to ensure every child goes to a good or outstanding school. We know that there are some really good schools already and it is my responsibility to help headteachers, governors and teachers reach these high standards right across the county.
“This means acting as a critical friend and challenging and supporting schools to promote and improve education for every child.”
Coun Robert Arckless, policy board member for children’s services, said Mr Johnson will be a ‘real asset to the county council’.
