TOWN councillors are playing a supporting role for Morpeth Theatre Group.

Members of Morpeth Town Council have awarded a £200 grant to the group to help kick off an Easter fund-raising event in the Town Hall.

The money was unanimously granted by the Finance and General Purposes Committee after councillors were told how important the contribution will be.

Coun Andrew Tebbutt said: “What generally a theatre group will do is aim to have sufficient funds in its coffers before a show starts so that if a show should have to be cancelled for things like weather, or a disaster hits, then the group can cover its costs and not be in debt at the end of a performance. Today it could cost around £6,000 to £7,000 to put on a show.”

Coun Derek Thompson added: “I really think we ought to support this group.

“It is extremely generous in giving complimentary tickets to charities and disability groups and people who have special needs. It has a huge impact on the town and that is what we are here for, to support groups such as this.”

Secretary of the theatre group Alison Starkey welcomed the award.

“On behalf of Morpeth Theatre Group, thank you to Morpeth Town Council for approving a grant for £200 for our society,” she said.

“The money will go towards costs for our Easter Fair Fund-raising Day at Morpeth Town Hall on Saturday, March 31.

“The support of the town council for all of our events is greatly appreciated. Any money we raise on the day will help us to stage our next pantomime in January 2013. Come along and see us and get some Easter treats.”
