The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for snow and ice in Northumberland tonight and tomorrow.

Forecasters have said there is a risk of two spells of persistent snow, one during the evening and the other in the morning, which could bring travel disruption and difficult driving conditions.

A more severe amber alert for snow has been issued in the Scottish Borders, while a yellow (be aware) warning for snow and ice is also in place across the rest of the region until midday tomorrow.

The Met Office said a cold, unstable airmass across Scotland and Northern Ireland has extended further south during today with snow falling to progressively lower levels across northern England. Tonight, a more organised area of showers is likely to affect Scotland, with the potential for several centimetres of snow at low levels. This area of snow may also affect parts of northern England. Ice is also likely to be a hazard again tonight.

The warning said: “Snowfall amounts will probably vary substantially across the amber area and there is the likelihood that some places will see very little settling snow. This warning will be kept under review and updated as and when necessary.”

Many areas across the rest of the UK are on snow alert, with frequent blasts of sleet and snow forecast, bringing yellow warnings for Northern Ireland and most of England and Wales overnight.
