A water treatment plant that supplies some 92,000 people in Northumberland is undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment.

Northumbrian Water is carrying out a £2.2million upgrade at the Warkworth Water Treatment Works, which supplies customers in Morpeth, Ashington, Alnwick and surrounding areas.

The work will involve renewing pumps, filters and computer control stations. It began on Monday and is expected to take up to nine months to complete.

Project Manager Michael Walsh said: “The treatment works will remain fully operational while we upgrade the site and there won’t be any impact on the water service we provide to customers as a result.”

The plant treats up to 42 million litres of water a day. The upgrade will help to maintain top quality drinking water.
