A COUNCILLOR has vowed to fight to protect a local community centre amid cuts of £250,000 across the service.
Following the county Executive’s decision to approve £18million of savings on Monday, Chevington with Longhorsley member Glen Sanderson has raised concerns about the future of Druridge Bay Community Centre.
“There is now a whole shroud of uncertainty thrown over these centres, one of which is in Chevington,” he said.
“It currently costs in the region of £38,000/£40,000 a year, but it’s at the very heart of the community.
“This is a community that hasn’t got a lot of cash in its collective pocket. It needs support and the county council has a role in supporting it.
“It will be a no-holds-barred fight, but I’m hoping it won’t come to that as I hope that the county council will see sense. It has come as a real shock.”
