PUPILS have come up with new ways to dig into Literacy Week.
Youngsters at Morpeth’s Abbeyfields First School took part in library visits, storytelling sessions and writing workshops, as well as a second-hand book sale for the week.
But they also had a more unusual take on the initiative as they invited parents to their Forest School.
Activities included bird counts, nature writing, clay letter making and children writing of their experiences of the outdoor sessions.
Forest School teacher Heather Pearson said: “We had a Literacy Week, with the emphasis on writing, as a whole school activity.
“Each class and year group ran their own literacy activities and invited the parents along.
“Every child has access to Abbeyfields Forest School and we had quite a lot of parents coming along to have a look.
“It was using the natural environment that we have at Abbeyfields to support Literacy Week at the school, which was quite a unique way of supporting it.”
She added: “Forest School has been going for a couple of years, but it has really taken off this year with every child being given access.
“Every child in the school has the opportunity to do a six-week block, with an hour each week in Forest School. A lot of schools do forest activities, but this is very much a progressive Forest School for the children’s learning.”
