A SENIOR councillor has welcomed approval of the Morpeth Northern Bypass project.
The Herald revealed last week that the £30.1million scheme had been accepted by the Government with the announcement that £21.1million would be given towards it from the Department for Transport.
MPs, county and town councillors hailed the news as a boost for jobs and development in the area, and now Northumberland Conservative Group Leader Peter Jackson has also praised the decision.
He said: “This is great news for Morpeth and the surrounding area. This announcement shows that when a convincing business case is put to central government we will be listened to.
“This investment will open up many opportunities that will provide Morpeth with a sound basis for growth and jobs for the next ten or 20 years. But more than that, it is the final link up with the Pegswood Bypass that will make such a difference to communications with the entire south east of Northumberland, linking the A1 with Pegswood, Ashington, Bedlington and down to the A19.
“Many years of effort have gone into preparing this scheme and I would like to congratulate all of those who worked on it for their efforts.”
The road will connect the A197 Whorral Bank roundabout with the A1 south of Fairmoor.
