TAXI drivers in Northumberland are gearing up for electric vehicles.
Phoenix Taxis, which has offices throughout the county, including Morpeth, has now installed three electric vehicle (EV) charging points at its Blyth headquarters, as well as introduced its first Nissan LEAF to the fleet in a bid to drive down fuel bills.
The company is also taking part in the SwitchEV pilot programme and has been trialling a Peugeot iON for the last five months.
Its charging points have been funded by the Charge Your Car project, which aims to install a full network across the region by next year.
Phoenix Taxis Managing Director Alexander Hurst said: “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity by Charge Your Car to have EV charge points installed on our premises.
“The main cost to any taxi driver is fuel and with prices rocketing seemingly on a monthly basis, EVs are becoming the more sensible fleet vehicle choice.”
The points are also open to the public.
Grants are available for any organisation wishing to install a charge point.
