PONTELAND First School is closed to pupils today and Monday after high winds caused damage to the roof.

Workers are currently on site to make repairs and it is hoped that the school will re-open on Tuesday.

Headteacher Lynn Blain said: “The very strong winds we had yesterday meant a few sections of the roof came loose, which made the building unsafe.

“We kept pupils inside and took advice from the county council. We then got some experts in who said the school needed to be closed.

“The loose bits did not fall down and repair work is being carried out today. If the weather conditions are ok the workers will come back on Monday and the plan is to re-open on Tuesday.

“I know it’s inconvenient to parents to have the school closed but the safety of pupils is paramount. We’re doing the very best we can to be open again on Tuesday.”

Darras Hall First School’s Lower School section is also closed today due to the heating system failing.

The school has advised that once the leak has been located, repair work is straightforward and it is hoped that it will be possible to re-open the Lower School on Monday.

The Upper School (years two, three and four) and Early Years unit are open as normal.
