A LONG-SERVING charity collector is hitting the streets once again.
Seventy-year-old John Carpenter, of Ulgham, has been a supporter of Christian Aid Week for 40 years.
And this year is no exception as he has been organising door-to-door collections and co-ordinating volunteers in Ulgham and Widdrington.
The annual fund-raising campaign is Britain’s longest-running door-to-door collection week.
The charity works in about 50 countries at any time, helping people in need regardless of religion.
This year the collection is focusing on tackling hunger, tying in with the organisation’s involvement in the Enough Food For Everyone If campaign, launched in January by more than 100 development and faith organisations to call on the Government to take action on global hunger.
Mr Carpenter is looking forward to playing his part in the collection again.
He said: “It was particularly memorable when we reached over £1,000 for the first time when I was involved with Christian Aid in Cramlington and there have been numerous other highlights over the years.
“I am motivated to seek justice because of my Christian faith and believe that Christian Aid’s focus on long-term development, campaigning, immediate aid and its ecumenical nature is the right approach to make a significant difference.”
He added: “With one in eight people going to bed hungry each night it shows we still have a lot of work to do and Christian Aid Week is a great way to respond in a positive way.”
