ENVIRONMENTAL champions across the county have been recognised in the Love Northumberland Awards.

The gongs were organised by Northumberland County Council as part of its long-running campaign to promote the work of the authority, partner organisations and community volunteers to enhance the local environment.

Awards were handed out in seven categories at a ceremony at The Alnwick Garden last week, which was attended by the Duchess of Northumberland and hosted by BBC Look North presenter Carol Malia. The Banks Group was the main sponsor.

Winners included the Old Bakehouse Millennium Green Trust in Morpeth, Belsay First School and Grange View First School in Widdrington, while Morpeth and District Red Squirrels was highly commended.

The winners each received £250 and the runners-up £100 to spend on their projects or other work in the community.
