Council issues a Fathers’ Day appeal for more male foster carers to sign up

A Fathers’ Day appeal has gone out for more male foster carers.

Northumberland County Council’s Family Placement Service has issued the plea for more recruits, whether the men are single or part of a couple and want to be the main carer or play a supporting role in the household.

In the North East a child comes into care about every six hours and in Northumberland at least two children a week come into care so the need for foster carers is great.

Council Policy Board Member for Children’s Services Robert Arckless said: “Men make a huge contribution to the upbringing of children and young people in foster care.

“For many looked-after children, living with a male foster carer has been their first positive experience of an adult male.

“We want to reach men whose partners are considering foster care and have concerns that would stop them coming forward as a family, as well as men who would like to be a main foster carer, either on their own or as part of a couple.”

A full support package is available. For information visit fostering.northumberland.gov.uk or call 01670 626262.
