Pothole backlog is set to be cleared

A backlog of pothole repairs should be cleared by the end of the month, council officials say.

Northumberland County Council says it has reduced the backlog by 71 per cent since the end of January, with 8,676 potholes repaired on local roads.

There are still 3,537 outstanding, but following investment in new methods and machinery, including the purchase of two Jetpatcher repair machines and the use of two additional road menders, the authority is confident they will soon be cleared.

Policy Board Member for Streetcare and Environment Ian Swithenbank said: “We are on track to fulfil our pledge to clear this backlog of potholes by the end of June. We have taken a proactive approach to pothole repair and we are doing more long-term repairs instead of temporary patches.”
