A MORPETH-BASED motor equipment supplier has helped an education body to go greener at one of its workshops.

Gott Technical Services has completed the installation of cutting-edge maintenance equipment at the Performance Track vehicle research and development facility, operated by Gateshead College, in a contract worth almost £50,000.

The project involved sourcing equipment from as far away as Germany to meet the college’s desire to have a world class centre for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Manufacturers can now use the workshop and test track to improve their environmentally-friendly vehicles by researching battery life and range, tyre wear, steering and other EV parts and equipment.

Gott Technical Services Director Ian Gott said: “We travelled far and wide to source the most up-to-the-minute repair equipment for the current range of green vehicles being manufactured now, as well as future models.

“We sourced a real mix of equipment with broad capabilities to deal with the current and future range of low carbon vehicles in the market.

“This was a great project to work on and one which showcases our capabilities in providing the very best in garage equipment for the low carbon vehicle sector.”

The centre, in Washington, has been fitted with three different types of vehicle lifts to allow Gateshead College to commercially lease individual parts of the workshop to other electric vehicle researchers and manufacturers.

Its Facilities Manager, Paul Mitchell, said: “The brief I gave Ian was difficult because we weren’t entirely sure what was available, what vehicles would be in the test centre and what kind of maintenance work they would require, which is why we needed a range of flexible and mobile equipment. We can now cater for the research needs for a range of clients and feel prepared for any future advances in green car technology.”
