SPORTS stars in Morpeth could be mistaken for characters in the 118 TV advert after putting on a stiff upper lip for charity.
Twelve members of Morpeth Basketball Club, including all nine players on the Mavericks senior team, agreed to grow moustaches throughout November as part of the Movember movement.
The international campaign aims to raise vital funds for research into men’s health issues, particularly testicular and prostate cancer, as well as increasing awareness of the illnesses.
And the Morpeth club certainly got into the spirit of the event, raising about £600 for the cause.
The money was collected from pledges from friends and family, while spectators at the home league game against North East Griffins at the Riverside Leisure Centre were asked for a donation.
The TyneMet Division Two match itself proved to be a hair-raising experience for the Mavericks.
They came back from 15 points down to win the game 66-64, scoring the decisive basket just before the final buzzer.
Club member Paul Clewes also enjoyed an extra victory as he took the award for best moustache, as voted for by a panel of Mavericks’ WAGs.
The club runs teams for players from the age of 11 through to seniors.
