Road-safety campaigner Julie Pörksen is calling on Northumberland County Council and the Highways Agency to monitor the safety of Northumberland’s roads as the HGV speed limit increases.
Ms Pörksen, Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for the Berwick constituency, said: “Increasing the speed limits for HGVs will improve traffic flow on our roads, but I’m concerned it may make existing danger spots even worse.
“I am calling on Northumberland County Council to monitor the A697 at Powburn and Thrunton and the Highways Agency to monitor the A1 at the Mousen Bends to ensure these changes do not lead to an increased number of incidents.
“At current speed limits, there are already too many HGVs crashing on Northumberland’s roads.
“We must ensure that injuries, fatalities and resulting road closures do not rise as speeds increase.”
Ms Pörksen has previously raised concerns about how the A697 will be impacted during the construction phase for the dualling of the A1 between Morpeth and Ellingham.
