A supermarket has recalled a range of chocolate biscuits amid concerns over peanut protein.
Tesco has recalled all date codes of its Mini Monkey Milk Chocolate Biscuits because the presence of peanut protein is not mentioned on the label.
The Food Standards Agency, which has issued an allergy alert, said this makes the product a possible health risk for anyone who has a peanut allergy.
A product recall notice from Tesco, which has a store in Amble, says: ‘Through testing we have become aware that peanut protein may be present in Tesco Mini Monkey Milk Chocolate Biscuits.
‘The product has a ‘may contain’ nut warning but peanut is not declared on the product label. This product may be unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of peanuts.
‘Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused’.
Customers who have bought the biscuits and have an allergy to or intolerance of peanuts are being asked not to eat them. Biscuits should be returned to Tesco for a full refund. No receipt is needed. For more information, contact Tesco customer relations on 0800 505555.
The Food Standards Agency issues an allergy alert when foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk.
